My Reading

What is this book about?

A collection of Munger’s speeches organized around a latticework of mental models: borrow reliable tools from psychology, mathematics, biology, and engineering so that one discipline corrects the blind spots of another, and treat inversion as a routine way to attack hard problems.

Why read it?

What it really teaches is where judgment comes from — not more information but better tools and fewer ways to fool yourself. Munger’s treatment of incentives, cognitive bias, and the circle of competence applies well beyond investing.

Core Ideas

  • Someone trained in a single discipline sees every problem as a nail; a latticework of models lets one tool correct another.
  • Never underestimate incentives: knowing what someone is paid to do is more reliable than listening to their explanation.
  • Invert: rather than asking how to succeed, list the reliable causes of failure and avoid them one by one.
  • The boundary of your circle of competence matters more than its size; knowing where you are ignorant is the real edge.

What questions does this book try to answer?

  • Which mental models are worth reusing, and which merely sound clever?
  • How can one systematically reduce one’s own errors of judgment?

Who should read it?

For anyone interested in the quality of decisions, not only investors. The speech format is loose; it rewards browsing over a single read.
